Duties

The Surety Underwriting team is seeking an ambitious professional ready to embark on a financial and analytical career within the surety industry. As a Surety Underwriting Trainee, you will work side by side with the leaders of the surety division, as well as seasoned and accomplished surety professionals. You will be exposed to and participate in a number of fundamental day to day surety underwriting and marketing activities, as well as key strategic operational initiatives of a dynamic and growing product line within Philadelphia Insurance Companies.

Summary -

Working under direct supervision, underwrites and markets assigned products by providing basic risk assessment and technical underwriting to determine underwriting acceptability or may provide support and assistance by handling administrative and routine underwriting tasks.  May provide basic level of financial analysis to determine credit quality.

A typical day will include the following:

  • Reads, studies and learns basic technical underwriting principles of the assigned line of business.
  • Learns to apply appropriate underwriting techniques necessary to make an accurate evaluation of acceptability of the risk and provide recommendation.  May evaluate credit quality
  • Maintains and updates underwriting files, as requested.
  • Supports and participates in proposals to producers and/or accounts negotiating terms and conditions.
  • Supports and participates in marketing activities within the region to promote the development of new business or may support underwriting staff using necessary systems, forms, methods and procedures.
  • Assists in the producer management process which may include, but is not limited to, assessment of premium collections

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or Business a minimum 3.0.GPA.
  • Excellent analytical and decision making skills.
  • Demonstrated technical competence in fundamental financial analysis.
  • Demonstrated organization skills and ability with a strong attention to detail.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills including ability to develop negotiation skills.
  • Willingness to relocate at completion of the Surety Training Program, subject to open positions in our field offices.
  • Prior internship experience in a business related environment a plus.
  • Prior participation in one or more community activities or student organizations preferred.
  • Work experience during college a plus.
